Having played rugby since the age of 7, I have got my fair share of battle scars. The knee and shoulder problems that lived with me week in and week out, are now even stronger and pain free than they were when I was playing. Why is this you may ask? Well, its all down to a system known as Structural Balance.
When I train my athletes for improved sports performance, my day to day clients for fat loss or someone looking to gain muscle. I always start with a series of assessments, one of these being Structural Balance testing.
The Structural Balance tests were designed by World renown Strength Coach Charles Poliquin, and I have had the privalage of learning the tests from him personally.
The pictures below show the results of the Structural Balance work I did for Greg.
The tests allow me to analyse weaknesses throughout the body and then appropriate exercises are selected and placed into the program. Some of the common weaknesses I see, are the stabilising muscles such as the vastus medialis (the tear drop muscle on the inside of the knee) and the shoulder retractors. If these are retrained correctly, poor joint alignment can be corrected and normal pain free range of movement will be restored.
If for example, your looking to increase your bench press, a structured 6 - 8 week corrective program for the shoulders is all it can take. The external rotator cuff muscles once trained, gives more stability to the shoulder joint and strength gains as much as 25% can be seen.
If you are a regular to my website or my facebook page, you will know that I work with quite a few superbike riders. All of the guys I work with undergo alot of shoulder stabilisation work and Structural Balance is so important to their performance on the race circuit.
