Elite Ice Hockey Training

M10 Strength Coach Mark Coles has teamed up with Nottingham Panthers Sports Therapist Scott Poundall to create a unique company called Elite Ice Hockey Conditioning.

The business has been set up to offer the highest level of Ice Hockey Strength & Conditioning in the UK. Our aim is to educate/coach existing Elite and  upcoming athletes on the importance of Strength & Conditioning in the game of Ice Hockey. It is such an important part of the American, Canadian and European culture and it is a large reason why some of the athletes in the UK don't make it. 

If you want to be fast, strong, powerful and injury free, you must add specific Ice Hockey Strength and Conditioning into your game plan.

Until now this type of information has only been available to those working with Ice Hockey Strength coaches in America and Canada, with Elite Ice Hockey Conditioning, it's now on your doorstep

My ambition is to not be a run of the mill personal trainer like so many others in the industry driven by money. I wanted to get the best start possible in my career and needed help to break the mould.

I contacted Mark Coles of M10 Fitness enquiring about internships to see if he could help me. He got back to me straight away and we arranged for me to go up. I was up early the day of the internship as i had a long drive ahead of me and was feeling quite nervous. The biggest thing I’ve taken away with me from spending a day with Mark Coles at M10 Fitness is his advice to "RECORD, RECORD, and RECORD!" Basically one of the first things he asked me when I came in to see him was if I had any records of my business? I couldn't answer the question!
 
Looking at M10's website, the most eye catching thing for me is seeing the pictures of the great body transformations Mark and his team at M10 have achieved. This was just one of the many great bits of advice and information I received throughout the day. Here's a few other reasons I thought the day was totally worthwhile:

1-1 Learning- I've done quite a few great courses but what is so good about the internship is that you can ask what you want! You can pick Mark's brain on any subject you want to talk about and he supplies the answers!

Going through the LHP Performance System- Covering everything from finding out as much as possible about your clients through an in depth interview, to different levels of nutrition, correct supplementation and structured training for fat loss.

The Gym & Training Session- For me just getting to look round the training facility was worthwhile enough; with all the great strength training equipment any personal trainer would love to have a chance at training there. The fat loss training session with Mark was brutal (I didn't pull a whitey, just went a bit pale! lol), but great to take back to my clients!

Inspiration- Mark is a very inspirational character and I came away with a real buzz for Personal Training again. Over the last 2 weeks since my internship I’ve really enjoyed putting into practise everything I learnt over the day, I plan to come back and learn more in the new year!

Modified Strongman training will take your fitness and sports performance to new levels. If that’s not enough for you, because of the huge amounts of lactic acid that is produced, it’s an awesome fat burning session too.


Strongman training is very popular in the sports performance circles because of its ability to develop true “functional strength” for athletes. According to world renowned Strength Coach Charles Poliquin, “Functional training should be defined as the execution of movements directly related to the patterns required for a given sport”. Many athletes may be strong in the gym, but they lack the ability to transfer this strength directly onto the field. For many athletes, this is more than often the missing link. By using exercise such as tire flips, farmers walks, prowler runs, sled drags and sand bag carries, true “functional strength” is improved.

Many individuals and athletes spend hours on treadmills or out road running in an attempt to improve their fitness levels, unfortunately in many cases this has little carry over to their sport. Strongman training has a high correlation to the movements found in sport and therefore develops the energy systems required.

FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE AND PERSONAL TRAINING

If you know anything about me, you’ll know that my passion in life is to help people realise their full potential. I get immense pleasure from teaching as many people as possible how to look great and feel great. And when it comes to helping people get in the best shape of their lives, our results show that we go further and deeper than nearly all the personal training companies you’ll ever come across.

Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of working with many people, helping change lives in more ways than just body composition and fat loss. In my search for excellence, I ‘ve come to realise that there are many other factors holding people back from achieving optimal health and body composition results.

SOMETHING MISSING

From a very early stage in my career as a Personal Trainer, I began to question the necessity of western medicine. Now don’t get me wrong – I know medicine has its place and I have the utmost respect for the doctors who are dedicated to medicine and helping save lives. But I just felt there was something missing…

I was constantly asking myself why people who struggled to sleep were taking medication, why people who were depressed had to take drugs to make them happy and why people were having to use drugs to control cholesterol problems and blood pressure. For most people with health issues, the basics of nutrition have never been considered, the correct amount of sleep and the load of stress so many people place on themselves are never even taken into consideration by conventioal medicine.

TRANSFORMING LIVES WITH FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE

When people come to transform their body shape at M10, these are just some of the major areas that I address within my system – and once these imbalances have been corrected, people’s lives and physiques have simply been transformed.

I was first introduced to the model of FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE on a Biosignature CE course in Arizona with the Poliquin Institute. (You’ll find a detailed definition of functional medicine at the end of this article but for the moment, just let me tell you that it’s personalised medicine which deals with primary prevention and underlying causes instead of symptoms for serious chronic disease.)

On the course I had the pleasure of hearing Mark Schauss speak on toxicity and evaluating laboratory tests. From that day on I was fascinated by the way that functional medicine was helping cure so many people of diseases such as Alzheimer's, auto immune disease, ADHD, autism, cholesterol problems, diabetes and many more.

I decided to expand my knowledge of functional medicine further by travelling to Tampa in Florida. In February 2011, I became the first UK Personal Trainer/Strengh Coach to attend the Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP) programme delivered by the Institute of Functional Medicine. As a result, I now offer the model of functional medicine to everyone that works with us here at M10.

WORKING WITH LEADING SPECIALISTS

To offer this new level, laboratory tests are sometimes necessary. For these I use one of the world’s leading labs, Genova Diagnostics, whose detailed tests allow me to look for such things as gastrointestinal imbalances, toxicity, hormonal imbalances, stress indicators and much more. These are all major reasons why people fail to improve their health, change their body shape, struggle to find the energy to exercise or even struggle to find even the energy to get through the day.

I have an affiliation with two London-based specialists. A leading doctor in functional medicine provides consultations to my clients and laboratory test interpretation support. And I also use Matt Lovell, an elite nutritionist.

WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE?

Functional medicine is personalized medicine that deals with primary prevention and underlying causes instead of symptoms for serious chronic disease. It is a science-based field of health care that is grounded in the following principles:

  • Biochemical individuality describes the importance of individual variations in metabolic function that derive from genetic and environmental differences among individuals.
  • Patient-centered medicine emphasizes "patient care" rather than "disease care," following Sir William Osler’s admonition that "It is more important to know what patient has the disease than to know what disease the patient has."
  • Dynamic balance of internal and external factors
  • Web-like interconnections of physiological factors – an abundance of research now supports the view that the human body functions as an orchestrated network of interconnected systems, rather than individual systems functioning autonomously and without effect on each other. For example, we now know that immunological dysfunctions can promote cardiovascular disease, that dietary imbalances can cause hormonal disturbances, and that environmental exposures can precipitate neurologic syndromes such as Parkinson’s disease.

Functional medicine emphasizes a definable and teachable process of integrating multiple knowledge bases within a pragmatic intellectual matrix that focuses on functionality at many levels, rather than a single treatment for a single diagnosis. Functional medicine uses the patient’s story as a key tool for integrating diagnosis, signs and symptoms, and evidence of clinical imbalances into a comprehensive approach to improve both the patient’s environmental inputs and his or her physiological function. It is a clinician’s discipline and it directly addresses the need to transform the practice of primary care.

I had some doubts and perhaps even fears about booking on to the Body Composition Course.

At 56 years, I am the oldest person on the current course. I am overweight and have not taken part in any form of real training for over 10 years. That didn't make any difference to Mark and his team!! - To be honest, I now know that unless there is an underlying health problem, age doesn't matter. The phrase 'mind over matter' really does apply.

So far, I have lost a stone in weight, I have seen bits of my physique re-appearing that have for years been lost under a layer of fat and I am slowly starting to feel better for it!!

It is hard - both the physical side and the dietary changes that are involved - but 3/4 of the way through and with the changes I have seen it is all worth it.

I didn't know what to expect with the training at M10 but I loved it. The classes and the guys are so motivating and you can literally feel a difference in yourself after the 1st workout. The 14 day fat loss program is tough at first but after the first week, I felt better than I had in months, I was more relaxed, sleeping better, less stressed and my concentration span had dramatically improved at work.

After the first 14 days I managed to lose 5.1% body fat and 3kgs in weight! I know the 3kg doesn't sound like a lot, but my body shape has changed so much, I can get back in my size 8 jeans and was so much more toned.

It just goes to show that losing weight isn't the priority it's the fat on your body that defines your shape.

I was overweight and out of shape due to a hectic work schedule and overdoing it at the frequent corporate hospitality events with my clients; hence, I thought it was about time I put a stop to my ever increasing waist line; therefore, I signed up to the Body Composition programme.

The sessions are great fun; whilst being very focused. Mark has been very supportive throughout the process; he has provided the coaching tools and information enabling me to make better food choices in general; which will insure I achieve my longer term weight and fitness goals.
