Develop sustainable habits to set yourself up for long term success

Hopefully you have been able to get a gym session in over the course of the weekend and are happy to be back to some sort of ‘training normality’!

As with anything in life, the key to long term success towards your goals is developing sustainable habits.

As mentioned in previous posts, setting realistic and inspiring goals, committing to them and being consistent are all important when it comes to achieving the results you are looking for. However, they will be short lived if you don’t develop enduring habits that will see you through any challenges or bumps along the way.

So, what are some of the habits that we see many of our clients adopt, to help them achieve long term successful changes to their body composition, as well as their health and fitness levels?

  • They make small, sustainable changes at a time. It can be tempting to want to change everything at once – in an attempt to fast track your results. However, this may set you up for failure and disappointment if you don’t see success straight away. Instead, focus on changing things slowly, and once you’ve made one change successfully, move on to the next.
  • They focus on recovery. Training tends to get glamorised as being the most important element of what will help you achieve results. When in fact, what you do outside the gym – especially from a rest and recovery perspective is just, if not more, important than the training session itself. Remember to schedule in some down time to take you away from your everyday stresses.

  • They have perspective. Many of the clients we work with, who are motivated and achieve great success towards their goals, have perspective. They see the bigger picture and understand that one workout missed or overindulging in one meal, is not the end of the world. They don’t simply give up or panic. They are in this for the long haul and just get back on track with where they left off.
  • They practice patience. Now this is one of the most underestimated elements of achieving your goals. Getting to where you want to be from a body composition or health standpoint, doesn’t just happen overnight. Be patient with the fact that every day you are making small investments towards your health and fitness goals. Enjoy the process and results will come in time!
