Do you have the coach's eye - what do we mean by this?
It simply means - do you see what’s happening when you're training your clients? Do you watch for clues to monitor whether your client needs to regress or progress? And do you know which exercises are right or wrong for your clients or do you keep pushing on hoping that repetition over time will fix it?
Take bar speed for example. This is a great clue that your client is strong enough to progress. We see so many trainers standing back, watching their clients knock out 12 reps of an exercise, and they don’t even see that the weight is flying up. Now stability and mobility issues aside, if the client can do the exercise quite comfortably, male or female, you can and should push the weight up.
Just because your client is 55 years old, doesn’t mean they can’t do a 60 kg plus romanian deadlift. If they’re strong, stable, and technique is good, crank it up. If you’re not doing so, you’re holding your client back from achieving better results. We never see age as a limiting factor for clients, their body tells us everything we need to know. They all do exercises that they thought they would never do, and this is because they’ve all been progressed at the right pace, respecting all the coaching variables.
Trainers spend too much time reading about fancy fat loss diets and training systems, and they forget that the most successful coaches have spent a good few years in the trenches learning about posture, flexibility, balance, mobility and stability.
We see so many trainers who watch their clients execute exercises poorly, yet they don’t seem to be able to spot what’s going on. They don’t have what’s known as the coach's eye.
Now fair enough, this does come with time. I'll be the first to admit that I've spent a long time watching coaches I respect and being critiqued myself. But if you are a trainer who isn't studying anatomy, posture, flexibility, stability and mobility, you’ll never learn to be able to spot these things. If you never spend time around top coaches, you'll never advance from where you are now. So those of you who wonder why your client isn’t progressing on your training system, it’s because you haven’t spotted that their body isn’t necessarily ready for it yet. Also you may not have spotted that they’re ready to push on harder, be that in exercise selection or the weight they're using.
The fitness industry goes through many trends, and right now there are many coaches pushing forward in the body composition field. This is great for the ever rising levels of obesity in our country, but too many trainers are missing out vital aspects of coaching.
Fat loss coaching isn’t just about diet, supplements and exercise. It’s also about taking someone who may not have trained before, assessing them, writing the most effective programme for them, and then taking that person through all the progressions to achieve the end result.
We pride ourselves on the fact that our personal training clients don’t just look great, they move well, they're stable, and they're so much stronger. I like to say that they’ve been coached, as opposed to simply being trained.
